The Business Plan

I have so many great things planned for this year, and one of those was finally hammering out a business plan. It's essential for all business to have a business plan. It identifies your mission, your keys to success, the market your trying to attract, and gives a small breakdown on demographics.

I'm using this really cool software called Business Plan Pro, that pretty much walks you through every step. I don't know what a lot of accounting terms are, but this program makes it pretty damn easy!

It is VERY time consuming, and have only gotten through 8 steps in the last 2 days. 40 steps left! When it's complete it will be 35 pages long!

I have some other great news too! I am going down to meet with a very special new friend today. He is not involved with this industry, but pretty close to it. Let's just say that starting very soon this year, 2 new products are going to be added to the line up. One of those products nobody else in the WORLD makes, and will completely set us apart from the rest!

My Lost Hobby

You know it's funny, before I started this business, photography was a hobby. Since that hobby turned into a profession, I now have no hobbys...which is bad.

Before photography, I started to ride Trials.

Trials riding? Yes, and not TRAILS riding...trials riding. The sport, or rather "art" is heavily based out of Europe. In fact when I used to ride, there was only 1 other person in the State of Florida who rode. There are MAYBE 500 riders in the US. Another fact is that there is only one US store who sells these special bikes priced at around $2000, or get one imported from Europe. The bikes are special in that they have no seat....your not meant to sit down. Norco, and Echo are among the top manufacturers.

Observed Trials is very popular with motorcycles, but them someone decided to adapt it for use with mountain bikes. Basically, you navigate a short obstacle course without ever having to put your foot on the ground. It takes incredible balance, a heightened sense of what's around you, and the ability to pinpoint exactly how far apart certain things are.

My 2 favorite riders are US based rider Ryan Leech, and Phil Feeney out of Europe. Ryan's style is very clean, very fluid, and sticks every landing with uncanny precision. Phil on the other hand is very aggressive, more freestyle, and just damn right wicked!

My personal goal for this year is to start riding again as a hobby. The bike I used to have was a stipped down mountain bike, wasnt meant of doing what I was trying to do, so I broke it. If I had a bike now, I'd start riding again! To all my readers, if you happen to be a trials rider, please contact me!

Of course my wife cringes thinking about her husband jumping 10 ft off a roof on a bike...BUT...you only live once. Gotta make the best of it.

Tampa Meetup - Recap

This evening I got to hang out with some of the coolest photographers; Courtney, Shem, Will, Taka, Steven, Chri s, Erin, and Travis...you guys rock! It's so important to network with local photographers, and some folks need to get it through their head that; we are not each other's competition. We are each others inspiration, and motivational factors. I must say, it was really nice to be around you guys. I have definitely found, "my other family," and am really looking forward to watching all of us grow together!

Of course, I will give the uber famous quote from Tim Sanders that I learned from David Jay; your network is your net worth.

I had another one of my visions....two today to be exact; this was one of them.

Ok, let me explain this shot. First off, this was the second vision I had when we were shooting in the alley. Courtney decided to add a funky twist to the shoot this evening, and offered a free canvas to whoever had the most creative shot. Well, I saw an empty bottle of Hennessy on the ground, and it was all over. Poor Shem. She really is a bright and happy girl, and hated to put her through this.

Hah....what am I talking about, this was frikking hilarious! In PS, desaturated, several layers of Lucis, and one freaky texture.

Beauty dishes are certainly becoming quite the popular DIY project for photographers. This is traffic to the blog in the last 7 days....80% of those hits to that post are from google searches....amazing! It's crazy because our traffic keeps going up...almost 4000 hits a month now, and nearly 3000 unique visitors per month! Not much to some, but means A LOT to us!

The fact is, there are no manufacturers that make beauty dishes for small flashes. Mark my words though, you will see one in the next 6 months.

Mad Max Monday

Back for another round of Mad Max Monday. This kid is getting huge! It's like he grows by the minute! I'll be sitting there at my computer, then look back at him and it's like he's already grown an inch!

Now his feet hang over the edge of his seat.

The next 4 were lit with 2 speedlights. A 580EX through a DIY BD above camera, a 430EX with Gridspot above, and a reflector to the right for fill.

This is now my all time favorite, and sort of an accident. He's getting to the stage where he is using his hands now, and grabbing the black thing that's been in front of his face since he can remember.

Rule #1 - Work around the subject

Brandi brought home a wittle hat and some goggles. Apparently she though Max was hitting the slopes! Funny thing is...that hat....it's for a 3-4 yr old!

Chillin like Bob Dillian.

See what I mean by grabbing everything? He is so close to holding his bottle on his own! Well, he does hold it, but cant really get the thing in his mouth! It's so sad watching him try!

Decided to have a little fun lighting this one. Outside was very dark and gloomy, 10th sec type stuff. Exposed for outside, brought in a gelled 580EX (CTB) bounced it off the celing to fill the room with blue. Planted a gelled 430EX (CTO) with a gridspot to light only his face.

He was as amazed as I was!

This always scares me when I see this happen. Celebrations Photography Studio out of New Jersey has claimed bankruptcy.

Typically, this kind of thing wouldn't get blogged, however there are now 1000+ brides without a
wedding photographer! Celebrations is one of those very large companies that shoot A LOT of weddings every weekend, by sub contracting out their work. Apparently, they were a little lax on getting albums out on time.

Post Process Lovin'

Honestly, we haven't had a paying gig in a couple of months. You know what though...I'm okay with that. We've booked several weddings, but no shoots. I have however taken 679 photos of Max since he was born in October. Those photos are in 56 dated folders. That's 56 times I have gone through the steps of my work flow, and each of those 56 times I have gotten just a little bit faster, and a bit more efficient. Do you know how much this will help us when wedding season starts?

My goal each time the shutter is snapped is to get the exposure right in camera the first time. There are several photographers who believe that you shouldn't worry about the settings, and just grab the moment. They are right, however that doesn't mean that you can't do both. Getting the shot right the first time will drastically reduce the amount of time spent in Lightroom or Photoshop, reduce the embarrassment when the bride asks to see the back of the camera, and will especially make things easier come reception time when it's time to throw up that slideshow for your uber special clients.

As I mentioned before, the photos that go up on this blog are "spiffied" up a bit. When I say "spiffied," what I really mean is that they get the special 7 Step HP Treatment. This is a mixture of Levels, Curves, Spot Healing, Dodging, Burning, Selective Sharpening, and Unsharp Mask. They are actually performed in that particular order as well. This 7 step process is usually reserved for up close photos of the face.

Here is an example. The photo on the left is straight out of camera, no adjustments. The photo on the right has undergone the 7 Step HP Treatment. Click the photo to make it bigger.

This doesn't mean that all the other shots get neglected. Those guys have a special 4 step process that they go through before they land in the hands of my clients. I'll say right now...I do not believe in actions. I think that you should discover your own unique post processing technique which exemplifies your style, while remaining subtle at the same time.

It is really hard to get a sharp shot with a sporadically moving object in a room that yields 800 ISO during the day! Most of these are done with a 50 1.8, opened up to f/2.

Keeping it Simple

I'm a really big believer in getting the image in camera right the first time, therefore reducing the amount of time you'll spend editing your photos. All of the images that go up here on the blog are "spiffied" up a bit. It's sort of like putting cologne or perfume on after getting all dressed up; the finishing touches...if you will.

90% of the editing is done with Adobe Lightroom. A video showing how we process step by step is in the works, and will be available soon. Keep checking back, or RSS this blog!

The remaining 10% of the editing is done with Photoshop, or Paint Shop Pro. Each program has their perks, so we use both. Even when files are opened in Photoshop, minimal work is done.

Noise Ninja only on high ISO's.

Keep it simple.

I can only imagine what he'll be rambling on about when he learns to talk! He is getting more and more active, and starting to roll over. He laughs when I hold him upside down, and laughs when we make faces at him.

I have grown soooooooo attached to my son! It's funny because I never wanted kids, and always told myself that I would never have kids...and here's Max! This little guy rocks! He's my little pal!

This is so great. David Hobby has really helped a very large community of amateur, and professional photographers with Strobist. Suffice to say, we were very excited when Bill Millios asked to be a part of something so special. He truly deserves this! Headed to Jamaica!

Wedding season is starting! Yaaaaaaaaaaaay!!!!!!

So super ecstatically excited about this one!

We just booked a destination wedding to Jamaica! I am so grateful that Tanya decided to let us be a part of her special day! Their wedding will be held in April, at the beautiful Coco La Palm Resort located in luxurious Negril, Jamaica!

April is a VERY popular month for weddings. It kind of sucks because I had to tell the bride that hadn't booked us yet,(appointment was set for this Saturday) that we were no longer available to shoot her wedding on that day. Tanya literally booked us before the other bride had a chance! Its cool though because I know a lot of photographers around here that will take good care of her and make sure her day is just as special as we would have made it.

We're also REALLY looking forward to shooting Nancy and Phil's wedding 5 days after we get back from Jamaica!

Brides, those of you who are stalking my blog, contact us ASAP because April will not be available for much longer!

Mad Max Monday

Ahhh...the last day of 2007. It's been one crazy year, and one hell of an adjustment becoming parents. I have to admit it though, he's been totally worth it. He is getting so active, and talking a lot (conveniently right when we're starting a movie). It's funny to hear him discover that he can make all kinds of little sounds, (and big sounds) with his voice.

He's laughing a little more now. We start crackin up when he laughs, then he laughs more, then my stomach hurts from laughing too much!

Branding Crisis

I'm going through a bit of a branding crisis here, and I need you guys' help!

I love the personal touch with my actual signature, it fits easily in the borders of the branded photos here on the blog, but its so boring. However, sometimes simple is better.

I love my original logo, because it seems much more professional. Its just that it doesn't seem to fit well on the website. There are also a few hidden secrets about this logo. The 2 palm trees not only describe our nature of being laid back, but they stand for my wife, and my son Max. The moon and the stars have always been an amazement to me as well.

Being accepted into the WJPA (Wedding Photojournalist Association) was a goal of mine for 2008. So naturally, when I received the email yesterday telling me I had been accepted, I was so thrilled! It's cool because only 5% of wedding photographers out there even qualify for membership!

Its not one of those, just pay your fee and welcome to the club. They actually review your website, and have strict guidelines on how to qualify for membership.

When shooting weddings, we're 90% documentary, 10% formals. The WPJA is all about those "candid," and, "in the moment" type shots, so applying to be a part of their organization seemed to make perfect sense.

So cool!

Time ~~sucks~~ bites. Sometimes I wish I could go back to being a teenager again. I'm somewhat of a nostalgic...stuck in the past sometimes. What strikes me as odd, is how fast time goes by. I remember saying to myself when I was 17 years old, "I wonder where I will be when I am 27." Suffice to say, I would have never thought I would be where I am today.

Time has passed so fast, my brother is now getting married! Cory is 1.8 years younger than me. Its just us...no other siblings. The 2 of us drove my parents crazy as it was...any more kids and they would have gone bonkers!

He's getting married to a really great girl, Denise who just so happened to have had a baby, Cierra! Cory has a daughter, my niece Madison. She just turned 5. Now...their one big happy family! Cory and Denise have been dating for a while, and last July when we flew back home, I had a chance to steal them and get some great shots!

Can you guess where "home" is?

(Its also funny to look back and see how much my work has progressed since then)

You see...us Haskins are a bunch of animated folk...never boring to be around!

Anyhow, this wedding will be weird because I'll be shooting it, and I'll be in it. My second shooter will cover the ceremony and formals, and I'll probably end up doing the rest. It'll be sooooo cool shooting my bro's wedding!

Ok...so there are several things I wanted to blog about, so I decided to bust it all out in one post cause tomorrow being Christmas Eve and all.

This child is getting frikking ginormous man!

2 very special friends got me a present!

Since the misses and the boy were over at a friends house, I ended up with a few hours to myself. I tried something a little different...headed for downtown St Petersburg, parked my Jeep...and just walked around. I wanted to play with the lensbabies that I just got as a present! There are so many amazing places that you would otherwise miss while driving.

Take for instance the Yacht Club that I never thought of visiting. I kind of just...stumbled upon it while walking around.

A random piece of wood...kind of lonely...all by itself being Christmas and all. Kind of looked like it was floating...well...floating in air...I mean it is floating...never mind.

I've started to see things way differently lately. I see lines, patterns, and shapes all over the place these days....its kind of crazy.

I totally dig this thing!

A really tall building. Did I ever tell you guys I am terrified of heights?

While at the little harbor, I thought it would be a pefect opportunity to do some HDR and Lucisart type stuff.

Mad Max Monday

It's actually a little chilly here in Florida...a bone chilling, jaw jarring 40 degrees. So, it was only appropriate that we build a snowman.

Also, seeing as how (at least I think) that most of the traffic to this blog is from photographers, I'm going to start giving lighting info.

The following 3 were shot with a 430EX into a beauty dish at 1/8th power placed low camera left, and a 580EX into beauty dish at 1/4 power placed high camera right. A large 4x6 reflector was placed on top to provide fill. Flashes were triggered with Pocket Wizards.

Hes getting very active. Trying to sit up and grab things now. Its quite interesting to watch, knowing that we ALL went through this too!

I posted these with the DIY beauty dish a few days ago, but they are so cute that I thought I'd put them on this weeks Mad Max Monday!

A Dish of Beauty

Well, a bowl really. Actually, its a 14" garden bowl from Home Depot, and the subject of this weeks DIY project.

DIY Beauty Dish

A beauty dish is an awesome way to modify hard light. It brings out texture, detail, and can really give a slight edge over photos done with soft boxes. We rarely ever shoot elderly people, so the need to de-emphasize the skin has never come up. Its provides a sort of "bounce" quality lighting, but not has hard as direct flash. Seeing as how they do not make them to fit small flashes, you have to build em yourself!

I took a 14" garden bowl from home depot, painted the inside FLAT white, and the outside FLAT black. The flat white is important! Cut a hole in the back to fit the -flash head. Next, I cut the bottom off of a 5" Tupperware container, and glued a 3" mirror in place to cover the hole (the bottom of the bowl was smaller than the mirror).

After that, I placed 2 bolts on either side to hold the container in place. The mirror spreads the light. If you can find a 3" parabolic (spot) mirror, that might be better. I could only find a 2". The flash pretty much hangs there...the hold is just big enough to where the velcro thats already attached to the flash on all sides kind of holds it in place.

After the bowl was complete, I drilled a hole through the top of a standard umbrella adaptor, and slide it into place...if that makes any sense....photos of the process would have been good, but I wasnt thinking this time around cause I wanted to finish it up!

The diffuser is flipped down to ensure an even spread.

I love this DIY beauty dish so much, I'm building a second to use ALL the time!

Tomorrow we're takin a trip to the fabric store to pick up some rip-stop nylon to make a diffuser that will slip over the bowl for a softer look!

I love how the light spreads out evenly! Super cool!

The flash fits snug into the back of the dish. Using the small bungee provide, hook one end onto the bar, and wrap around flash placing other end on the bar.

You will also be required to sign a waiver freeing us from any legal actions that may be taken from flashes falling out of the back of the beauty dish. Again, this is a DIY project, and while I do not expect any problems, I hope you understand the reason for signing the waiver. We have only had one instance where the wind blew over the lightstand and in this case, the BD saved the flash.

The Rivers Family

This evening we had the pleasure of hanging out with Rus, Gus, and the Rivers family. These kids are like the Energizer Bunny on a 6 pack of Red Bulls! Talk about moving targets! This basically gave me a look into what's in store for us in about 3 years! I think I may try to start getting back into shape now!

Mom and Dad have definitely done a great job with these guys, and they were a pleasure to be around!

The Coffin Family

This evening we got to hang out with Joe, Leah, and Colby. They wanted a "relaxed, and laid back" family session...and boy did they come to the right place!

Non-posing, non-traditional, and completely un-obtrusive...those qualities play a major role not only with our wedding work, but with our "Life" sessions as well.

Although it started raining a bit in the beginning, it stopped just for us about 20 minutes later! Colby was full of smiles, and I am beginning to wonder if I really look funny. I mean...Max smiles all the time when I look at him...and Colby was smiling too!

Joe, you have such a beautiful family, and I feel honored to have you guys as my clients!

We always start of with the ~~easy and lazy~~ available light stuff to get warmed up.

However as soon as we started, the rain came down!

Ahhh....safety...refuge under a pavillion facing the west...good light all around.

Colby was really interested in what I was carrying around...well...she was mostly interested in the ginormous reflector Chris was holding!

Ring Flash o' Wood

Ring flashes are fascinating. Shadow less light...something I am a BIG fan of...frikking super sexy. There are a lot of different designs going around right now for a DIY version, and this one in particular caught my attention. I really believed it had potential, and it does! To shake things up a bit...I decided to make mine out of balsa wood. The entire thing ways less than a pound, and is super sturdy. A while back, I made another DIY ring light that almost caught the house on fire...this one is much safer.

Sure...they make ring flashes that you can buy for about $400, but then you need the battery pack to go on location, and that bumps it up to about $800 or so. Besides, at this point in my career, I do not do enough high fashion/commercial work to justify purchasing a real one.

Making one is so much funner! (thats right...funner)

Actually...it wasn't fun. The damn thing took me an entire day to build, it's crooked as hell, but I'm happy with it!

I'm not going to go into a lot of instructions...the pictures are pretty self explanatory.

What I will say is this...I'm paintin this bad boy, and inscribing our logo on it! I'm going to take it for a real world spin tomorrow night when I meet up with a bunch of cool OSP folk.

Photoshop Lovin!

So, last weekend I was on my way to the grocery store (thats a duty I took over when Max came), when I passed by this food place called Biff Burgers (no joke). They were having some kind of mini car show with all kinds of old cars! I immediately aborted the mission, and ran home to get the gear (luckily, my wife is use to this).

I'm kind of apprehensive when it comes to walking around a busy place with a bunch of people with a camera and a tripod...so I really do not do it often...but these cars were frikking sweet, and the perfect candidate for this cool Photoshop plugin called Lucisart. The plugin is a bit pricey, and very confusing to use, but it's so frikking awesome once you find a rhythem and know which photos it works best on! Basically, it alters the lights and darks of a photo simultaneously, giving an HDR'ish appearance.

The one draw back of using this plugin, is the fact that it introduces what I like to call, "crap." Other photographers like to call it, "noise." I also will advise to not use this plugin on people....it makes them look sick...pale....and skin tone is one area I won't go just yet...people are sensitive.

The photo below was straight out of camera. It's not bad...it's just not like...wow!

After about 45 minutes in Photoshop, this is what I came out with. In my opinion, the trick is not slamming down a layer at 100% opacity and leaving it! I applied probably 20-25 layers at various opacities ranging from 20-60%, with an occasional levels and curves adjustment to compensate for the over exposure. After that, I spent a good while dodging and burning at 10% for midtones. The result was a fairly noisy image, so I ran a special little action that I found a while back that smooths everything out by painting.

So...while business is slow...go shoot something...shoot anything. The more you shoot, the more you learn. The make some crazy stuff in Photoshop. The more you use it, the faster you'll get!

Dude on a Bike

As a pro photographer, when business is slow, your faced with two decisions; shoot for free, or don't shoot at all. Myself, I prefer the first.

I had a vision, and wanted to make it happen, so we did! I put an ad out on Craigslist for a, "Dude on a Bike." A rather eager gentleman by the name of Ray chimed in, and was all for it. His bike is a complete custom chopper, very shiny, very loud, and probably very expensive.

The idea was for the light from the flash to freeze Ray and his bike, while a slow shutter would streak out the lights of the passing lightpoles as we sped over a bridge here in St Pete/Tampa.

Only thing I haven't figured out, is how to be granted 2nd Curtain Sync when there's no TTL. Pop the flash manually maybe?

We attached a 580EX, a 430EX, and a set of pocket wizards to the top of our Jeep, and pointed them at Ray who was traveling behind us at about 15 ft. Inside the back of the jeep, we had the tripod propped up to hold the camera.

70mph over the Gandy Bridge with $1000 in gear strapped to the roof of the Jeep, whilst the back window hatch was open just slightly so I could get just the right shot! After one pass over the bridge, I had my settings nailed down...F/10, and over a 1 second exposure! Both speedlights were on 1/2 power, and had CTO gels attached for the second run!

Why did we do this?

Because I just had to feed the hunger to shoot, and I knew this probably had never been done before!

Was it worth the risk of losing the gear?

You bet your arse! Look at this shot!

Although I got the shot I wanted, I thought we'd push our luck a bit and get a different angle. This time around we had Ray in the next lane over, whie I was shooting out of the side window of rthe Jeep. My assistant Chris was holding a 580EX with attached pocket wizard and CTO out of the back hatch, and this is what we got.

8 weeks old today!

Morgan loves Max. He's always right near him...like his second Daddy.

He smiles more now...well...he's been smiling every day since he was 2 weeks old! Except, the moment the camera goes up and my face is blocked...smile goes away. So now I have to focus, compose, and then pull my head a way to the side so he can see me!

I really don't like this dog. What? I'm serious, and I'm not trying to be mean. I think this dog lives on crack or something. He's always twitching, and always on my feet. Ok...he's just a little cute, and it is the holidays, so we've decided to keep him around just a little longer.

Rosco's just a tiny bit better. Mainly it's the staring thing. He is forever staring at me...like...trying to figure me out or something. It's really quite disturbing!

Well, not this year...Max wont help me put up the lights! Its also the time of year where Brandi gets sick of me watching my most favorite movies ever!

Seriously though...all I want is an official Red Ryder carbine action 200 shot range model air rifle with a compass in the stock in this thing that tells time!

Online Viewing and Ordering

In an effort to better serve our current, and potential clients, our partnership with Pictage has been terminated. This is for several reasons, the main one being that they bombard my clients with so many emails to buy prints its ridiculous!

Another BIG reason is that Pictage's user interface isn't the best in the world, and I've had to help LOTS of clients log in to see their photos! It should not be like this, and is no more!

From this point forward, we are taking full responsibility for packing, and shipping the prints ourselves. The quality of the prints will still remain to be of the utmost importance, which is why we have chosen a new printing lab as well.

In addition, the cost per print has been drastically reduced. We are not in the business of making money off of prints. Although its an added bonus, our main focus is directed towards making the relationship with our clients more personable. Allowing us to ship prints ourselves, means that we can include little personal notes with each order!

New Gallery

We've gotten several emails lately asking if we provide children, and family shoots. Of course we do! The website has not had a gallery, because these sessions are not booked with us to often. After thinking about it, and going over my folders, I do indeed have enough to put up on the website.

Max plays a BIG role in this. I take sooo many photos of him that are put on this blog, and now folks are starting to hire us for their children, and family portraits. Thanks son!

I thought about just having my website dedicated to weddings, but if I had all my eggs in one basket, I'd go crazy!

Speaking of crazy, for the first time ever, my site went down today because of too many hits! Wow! Now if only I could turn those hits into appointments! That would rock!

Mad Max Monday

That's right folks, we're back on track with some new stuff for this weeks Mad Max Monday. I think he grew like 50 lbs between last week and this week! The older he gets, the more he is looking like me! Frikking crazy!

We're really just one big happy family. This was the 3rd attempt at this photo because we couldn't stop laughing!

Since launching LUMU! last month, we've had an incredible response rate. As of now, we only have 2 months open for meets next year. We'll be in FL in Feb, CO in Mar, AL in April, LA in May, TENN in June, TX in July, FL again in Aug, Ohio in Sept, and back to GA in October. We might leave November and December closed to re cooperate!

On a personal note, I've always loved helping people. Whether it be giving the bum on the street 2 bucks even though I know he'll spend it on beer, or giving an elderly woman the shopping cart that's stuck to the others, it's always made me feel good to help others. I feel so grateful to now be in a position, to help other photographers further themselves, by providing a big networking workshop such as LUMU!.

About a mile from my house, there is this motorcycle junkyard...well...graveyard I suppose. I pass by it all the time on the way to the post office, and have been wanting to get inside to take some photos for months now.

Today, I finally decided to head down and capture my vision. The owner of the yard was your typical burly junkyard guy, with his son running the front desk. It was kind of cool because the kid must have been like 10, and he was fixing motorcycles. Crazy.

Anyhow, the guy tells me that all kinds of photographers have come in and taken photos, and all he asks is that he gets at least one photo. Well apparently, nobody has come through, which is sad because the dude doesn't have to let photographers on his property to begin with!

I think he'll be happy with these!

Mad Max Monday

This weeks installment of Mad Max Monday marks the 150th post on this blog. It's been quite a trip, and I sincerely appreciate all of you guys who are always visiting!

Max is growing like frikking crazy! I am positive that he is going to be over 6 ft tall! All he wants to do lately is stand up...and he's only 6 weeks old! He looks around like crazy, and is always still smiling!

On the real, raising a kid is harder than I ever thought. By nature, I'm sort of a selfish person, and selfish with my time. It's quite the change to go from that, to paying 100% attention to him when I'm watching him. Man I can't do anything! So...I figured...I'll just take lots of pictures!

I don't really do studio shots, but wanted to get some semi-studio type stuff. I propped up the 4x6 reflector as the background, and set up a 42" Photoflex Diffuser with the flash behind it. Needless to say, this was his reaction to the huge white thing!

LUMU! Forum

There's been a load of great support for these LUMU! events, and I truly feel blessed that there are a growing number of photographers that believe in this!
Next years schedule is filling up quick. In March, along with the 3 weddings already booked, we'll be headed out to Denver for the 2008 Colorado LUMU! Neither myself, my assistant, or my video guy have either seen snow in our entire lives, so this should be an interesting affair. I've got a list of things to do; snow angels, snowball fights, build a snowman, ski, snow mobile, and snowboard. Am I missing anything?

Also in the works are shoot-shops in Tennessee, Texas, Alabama, and Louisiana!

Most of the planning for these meets are done over the internet, and on the threads within Flickr. Due to Flickr TOS, we really can't be advertising, or posting about LUMU! on their boards anymore. After all, we dont want to get the Strobist group on Flickr "nuked." (Official DH Term) So, we built a forum where we can talk all we want!

"The Modern Version"

Advice for New Photographers

I always get emails asking how I do this, how I do that, and how did I start. I always give solid advice, as I remember being in that situation. We've ALL been in that situation. Sometimes, I think experienced photographers forget that they started small too, when they give advice to new photographers such as, "Go and buy a 47" LCD to display your photos."

This was pretty much the icing on the cake.

I am tired of seeing new photographers get bad advice! It will only delay the time it will take you to be successful. Perfect practice makes perfect!

So, I thought about the most important things that a new photographer NEEDS to know, in order to make a successful breakthrough into this already over-saturated industry.

Camera
Everything pretty much starts here. You DO NOT need a $4000 camera to make great images. You will learn that the quality of your work is directly affected by two factors; light, and your glass (lens). As much as you will be tempted to buy the kit, buy the BODY ONLY! The kit lens that comes with these cameras are...well...crap. Perfect practice makes perfect. Don't start out with shatty glass. Canon and Nikon both make entry level DSLR's for about $600 now.

Lens
Both Nikon and Canon make a f/4 image stabilized lens (or vibration reduction). Go with this. The IS, or VR will allow you to hand hold at slower shutter speeds. I've hand held at 1/5th of a second and maintained overall sharpness. Both lenses retail for around $600 or so. This is all you'll need to start, but if your going to be shooting weddings...brace yourself....breathe....you'll need to spend 2 grand on the 70-200 F/2.8

Flash
This decision depends on what you are going to be shooting. I will always tell you to operate your flash off camera. The act of merely taking the flash off the camera, and setting in on a stand to your left will dramatically increase the depth and dimension of your photo. You DO NOT need a $400 brand name flash to start! Vivitar still makes great flashes starting at about $80. (just DONT put this off brand flash ON your camera...you will fry it.)

Triggering Device
This part will be half as expensive as your camera. There are A LOT of different devices on the market, and all operate in different fashions. Remembering again what I said about, "perfect practice makes perfect," anty up the $400 you'll need for 2 Pocket Wizards. The are the most reliable means of triggering off camera flash.

CF Cards
I wouldn't buy anything bigger than a 2GB capacity card. I just couldn't trust every image I had on 1 16GB card. What if you lose it? What if it gets wet? You'll need at least 4.

So now you've got THE most basic setup you can have. The only other misc items I would add are; a stand, umbrella bracket, and a shoot through umbrella.

Now what?

Read
You really should start out at Strobist. That blog is THE biggest off camera lighting, and learning resource on the internet. Check out Lighting 101. You will spend about 4 months reading those exercises, and practicing. This WILL help you. After your done there, hit the forum. The one I recommend the most out of all of them is the Strobist Board on Flickr. These folks are downright there to help, and this is the only forum I know of where its not a popularity contest like high school. In the beginning, I logged over 2,000 hours of research and reading! I knew how to operate the flashes in manual, before I ever got them. I knew several lighting techniques, without having even done them yet because I didn't have the stuff! The good thing about forums, is that what ever is written there, is there forever! I basically read about every mistake all new photographers made, and did the exact opposite. If your going to be shooting weddings, read EVERY thing you can about David Jay, Dane Sanders, and Matt Adcock. There are a number of other world famous photographers, however these guys will be, "your bumpers in your bowling lane." Heh...Matt is more like a mentor to me now...such a great dude!

Workshops
This is where my passion lies. Its unbelievable to me the number of workshops available today! I highly recommend attending a workshop, but there are several factors to consider before you decide. The average workshop will run you between $500 and $2000. Some workshops show you how to sell $10,000 wedding albums, others let you shoot with every piece of equipment imaginable, and some are so outrageously priced thats it will cost you more than your equipment does at this point! None of this will help you. What will help you is spending time with other photographers, and listening to what they have to say.

Of course, at this point I have to introduce you LUMU!. If you want to operate your flash off camera, and get lit with 49 other photographers, then attend a LUMU! event!

Website
Ok...so you know how to light some stuff, you Got Lit at LUMU!, and now you've got some great photos to prove it. It's time to put them online, and for this you'll need a website. Your online presence is an extension of your personality. If you decide to build it yourself, you'll never be done with it. If you decide to spend big money on a custom site...well...you should have just bought another flash...remember what I say about the quality of your images being in "the light and the glass."

I have to recommend my friends Jen and Jamie over at portfoliositez.com. Those of you who know me, you guys know I rave about them all the time. No, I do not get paid for it! Its just that this is THE best package on the internet today, and these girls work so hard to provide such an awesome service! I mean, you cant beat a beautiful website with all the bells and whistles +hosting for $10 a month. It doesn't get any better than that!

So, I hope this helps you in your quest, because typing it has given me arthritis.

One HOT November!

It's November here in Florida. Of course, you won't find us bundled up next to a campfire, sipping on some hot tea, singing Kum-bah-yah (ok, so we did it at the Georgia meet...so what). Oh no...we're outside on the beach, shooting models in lingerie!

Last night we got to hang out with Barbara and Chris. I've gotta tell you, these guys are troopers! They did such an awesome job, and I want to thank them so much for volunteering for my project! I wanted to remake a 90's classic, however with more of a modern touch. We shot the series in both available light, and using strobes. For me....the shot with the strobes just have so much more impact! I heart using flash!

Can you tell what we we're trying to re-make?

Be creative. Sometimes the things you want to do have already been done. The way to be different? Just find another way to do it.

Here are the single shots, and a little bit about how they were set up.

The sun in this shot is sitting off to the right. The back of his shirt is blown out just a bit for my taste, however in this case, I didn't feel that it was too distracting. A Canon 580EX was set on a stand to the left, strapped with a full CTO, and power was adjusted to 3/4. An additional 430EX was set slightly lower than the camera for fill, strapped with a 1/2 CTO, and power adjusted to 1/4. Flashes were triggered with Pocket Wizards. WB adjusted to 4200 in Lightroom.

We stayed in the same spot for this shot, and just had Barbara jump in. I wanted her to be, "teasing him." I think she got it. 580EX was set on a stand to camera left, fitted with a full CTO, and set to full power. Another flash was set to the right side of Chris' head. A 430EX with another full CTO, and set to 3/4 power. This flash pretty much blocked out the sun. I wanted to create my own sun because when the WB is adjusted to compensate for the CTO, his head would have turned blue. I wanted to maintain an average color temp across the board. The flash was triggered with Pocket Wizards, and the WB was adjusted to 4200 in Lightroom.

This one's my favorite! This shot reveals the true beauty of speedlights when used just right! If you look at the top of the photo, you can where the sun is hitting. By the time they sat down on the ground, they were in shadow, so we made our own sun! A 580EX was set to camera left, strapped with a 1/4 CTO and power adjusted to 3/4. A 430EX was set directly across to add some light to the back of them. Another 1/4 CTO was added, and power adjusted to around 1/2 I think. We do not use umbrellas, softbox's, diffusers or anything like that. There are several tricks to make hard light appear relatively soft. On this run, we use these...and we use them quite frequently. Flashes were triggered with Pocket Wizards, and WB was adjusted to about 5000 in Lightroom.

This shot was taken in the same location, we just turned towards the sun...which by this time....was beginning to already set! A 580EX was set directly to my left, and relatively close...really close...about 2 ft away close to appear soft! Flash was set to 1/4, and fitted with a 1/2 CTO. A 430EX was set to 3/4 power, and set right behind the couple to give a very subtle backlight mimicking the setting sun, as by now it was already gone. Both flashes were triggered with Pocket Wizards, and WB was adjusted to about 4800 in Lightroom.

For the last shot here in the series, I wanted Barbara to basically act like she was running away. Like...she was all into Chris and then at the very end...."buh-bye!" No light stands on this one, just my assistant and another aspiring photographer named Shem. She came out to watch, and to help my assistant, as she is trying to enter this industry herself! Great job Shem! My assistant Chris (yes, 2 Chris' on the shoot), was holding a 580EX to camera left. It was strapped with a full CTO, and power adjusted to 1/4. Shem was holding the 430EX on the opposite side, strapped with a 1/2 CTO, and power adjusted to 1/2. We pretty much ran in a pack...took a few tries....but I like the way it turned out. Flashes were triggered with Pocket Wizards, and WB was adjusted to about 4200 in Lightroom.

As we grow, I learn new techniques, and new ways of doing things. Up until a few weeks ago, I was anti-post-workup-in-the-photoshop-thing. Since then, I do open up SPECIAL files in CS2 to give them a little more.....pizaaz! Levels, curves, and a special little plug in that I have fallen in love with! Tell you more on another post!

Mad Max Monday!

If you haven't noticed, I live a very fast paced life. My little brain operates at light speed, so you really have to try to keep up! This is probably the main reason why my blog is updated so often. We're approaching 150 posts. Its kind of cool to look over the comments since the beginning. Its also pretty funny to read my first post ever! Ready...Fire...Aim!

Max is crying a lot...lol. Well he is! However, he sooooo cute, that you cant be mad at him! He is starting to hold his head up now, and trying to start mumbling. I'm tellin you, this kid is going to be too smart for his own damn good! He continues to smile pretty much all the time...when he's not crying! Lol...)

Its times like now..where I miss my family. They are back out in Texas, my home away from home. I love you guys! Them, along with Brandi's grandparents and family just adore Max, and is THE reason why I do Mad Max Monday's! This kids life is going to be so well documented! Here's this weeks picks for Mad Max Monday!

Sneak Peak at LUMU!

I am so excited to be offering something that this industry needs right now! I've been thinking for a while about starting a workshop. Many thanks to Matt for the encouragement! Thanks man! The problem with workshops right now, is that there are too many to choose from, and they all are over $500. I'm not saying that this is too much to pay to acquire knowledge from the worlds top photographers, its just too much to pay when newer photographers have bigger priorities.

Our networking shoot-shop is different, in that it allows the photographer to network with 49 other like minded professionals. Its more like a "workshop in disguise"! Instead of holding a small workshop with 10 or so people, it was decided that it would better benefit everyone to have A LOT more photographers involved. The ideas, the sharing, and the relationships that are developed are the driving forces behind this!

OK...so what the heck is "LUMU!" ?

LUMU! is short for "Light it Up Meetup," and is destined to be THE premiere networking shoot-shop for photographers of all skill levels and practices. The meet is structured around using Strobist-style techniques. No on camera flash here buddy!

- Imagine playing with almost every triggering device, flash, and camera thats available!
- Imagine multiple Trash the Dress Sessions going on at once!
- Imagine 50 strobes on stands, whilst 50 photographers scramble to get that "money shot."

Sound crazy? Sound like a chaotic event? Almost...but VERY different than any other workshop available today!

- Learn single, and multiple flash techniques that can be used on the fly!
- Learn how to "pose without posing" in real time!

I have been super busy lately! I cant believe I went an entire week without posting! Crazy! There are so many great things happening right now.

- We're getting ready to launch a new site for photographers! In lieu of the highly successful Florida, and Georgia Strobist Meets, we decided to branch off on our own! The name is changing, things are becoming highly organized, and attempts are being made at obtaining sponsors. This will be the premiere event for photographers one day! The new name is, "Light it Up Meetup," or "LUMU!" We're actually in the process of getting that trademarked! Super exciting! The site will go live within about a week, and you'll see it first here on the blog! Heres a little sneaky peaky for the time being!

Other News
- Max is getting big! He smiles every time he sees us! Its so funny! Its like....50% sleeping, 20% crying, and 30% smiling! We took him out to the pumpkin patch on Halloween Eve, but unfortunately...theres only so much a 4 week old will do! Ahh! Here's a cool photo from the pumpkin patch.

Last Monday we were a little off track because of the Georgia Strobist Meet, however things are back to a (semi) normal routine now. Max is growing like crazy! Its like...all of a sudden...one day he looked just a little bit older!

He has apparently also discovered that he can scream at high levels...at least thats what Brandi says. He also smiles...a lot...I think he thinks that I am funny looking...anyways...finally got a shot of him smiling! So cute!

Can you believe its been almost 4 weeks already?

Is it possible to have non stop hiccups? I'm tellin ya...this kid constantly has the hiccups!

Oh..and he just looooves his medicine!

Anna Marie Island Wedding

This evening the light was absolutely perfect! We drove down to Anna Marie Island to help cover a wedding with Tennessee wedding photographer Gregory Byerline. For him, this is a destination wedding...but for me...this destination is our home! Gregory is such a great photographer, and it was a blast hanging out with such a cool dude!

Its kind of weird to help cover a wedding. You never really meet the clients, so you miss all of that "getting to know you" type stuff...so...I just shot from the heart.

Even worse...I didn't even get there names! I know..its sad...BUT...I could tell so much about them by the way the acted. Very goofy, fun, outgoing, and energetic! You could definitely tell that these guys are head over heels in love with each other! So mushy!

Chris is starting to get sneaky with the camera snapping shots of me...

I'm telling you...my assistant has been watching me for months...now he's picking up. Can you see me? I sooo sneaky! Seriously though, I'm skinny so I can hide in small places!

This shot is probably now my all time most favorite favorite (yes thats 2 favorites) shot ever! This is pretty much straight out of camera...WB set to about 12000 to achieve old look!

The tables were glowing underneath with these cool lights. The shutter on that was about 1/15th of a sec. A 580EX on a 10ft stand provided that extra "flavor" as Matt would say.

2007 Georgia Strobist Meet

This weekend was the 1st Annual Georgia Strobist Meet...and the first time I'd ever been camping...ever! I cannot even begin to explain how awesomely perfect it was. The people, the weather, and the location were just..."perfect."

Something happened that day in Hard Labor Creek State Park, and I don't think that anyone who was there will ever forget it. Although Chris, Eric, and I froze on Saturday night in our dinky little tent, it was well worth the trip to see all the smiling faces.

Jeremey, dude...you had to of set a new record with your ebay trigger mod. We couldnt even see you anymore. You had to have been firing that flash from at least 400 yards away through a hill! Amazing!

Chad, my god man...thank you for everything. The bikes, the outrageously outgoing and beautiful models, and the tent...dude...if it weren't for you...we would have been ~~screwed~~ in quite the predicament. (We forgot the metal poles to the tent!)

Max is now 12 days old. For the last 2 days he's been a butt....not sleeping when he's supposed to! However...you cant be mad for long when he just gives you that little smirk! I'm still trying to catch it on camera!

He's been keeping his eyes open a bit longer...we think they are blue...but I guess they might change color or something wicked like that! He also can tell when Moms in the room....tracking really well. Oh...and I think he's playing games already! Seriously...dudes...I was having this little mental conversation with him, all was good, then when Mom comes in the room he all of a sudden starts crying.....heh......moms a sucker for you.....but I know your games boy!

You know its funny, after posting this blog then looking at the photos..you can really tell that I am right handed! Thats so weird they are all the same angle...just most comfortable that way I guess!

Just a friendly reminder, the deadline to sign up for the 1st Annual Georgia Strobist Meet is in 3 day's! That's Sunday October 14th! As of this post, there are 37 photographers, 6 models, and 1 video guy in attendance. This meet is going to rock the house!

I'm so excited to get the opportunity to not only teach, but to meet such an widely diverse group of great people!

We're heading up on Saturday, and actually...gulp....camping Saturday AND Sunday night! Just between us....I've never been camping...this will be interesting....I REALLY like my coffee...damnit!

So I figured it out. So far I've got about 40 photos of max. If I take 4o photos a week, for 52 weeks until he is 21 years old, he'll have 43,680 photos to look at! Muah-ah-ah! It's only appropriate that I dedicate Monday's to Max (plus it rhymes).

We've come a long way in less than a year; 8 weddings, 9 engagements, 24 model shoots, 6 pet shoots, 4 family shoots, and one bad ass photography meet.

I'm a firm believer in the saying, "good things come with time." Today is our time, and I am so super excited to be announcing the launch of our brand spankin new website! Its everything I have wanted, and more! I love, love, love it! I searched for months for music that fit our personality, and TJ Hill nailed it on the head!

There are still a few bugs that need to worked out...seeing as how the site went live within 45 minutes instead of the expected 1-2 days! As a result of this change, the images on this blog will be down for a bit, but should pop back online before too long so be patient!

Jade and Eric's Engagment Shoot

This evening we headed out to Pass-a-Grille Beach for Jade and Eric's engagement session. We're shooting their wedding next March, so this was the "getting to know us" session that makes the wedding day run much smoother! I can definitely tell that their wedding will rock, and I am so looking forward to being a part of their special day!

Eric, you did good on this one dude! Jade is stellar, and you guys make such a cute frikking couple! Cant wait 'till you guys' wedding next March!

Now for my favorite part, strobin in up! We used 2 Canon Speedlights fitted with 1/2 and 1/4 CTO's, custom made diffusers, and triggered them with the ST-E2 Transmitter. The sun was setting rather quickly, so I decided to let TTL have control this time instead of using Pocket Wizards.

Ahhh.....HP's Laid Back Portraitism at its finest! (Is Portratism a word? Blogger is flagging it, but I think it should be a word...makes sense.)

Holy crappity!

That pretty much sums it up. This is Brandi and I's first born, Max. Both of us had no idea what to expect. You see babies born on TV and such, and you really dont think twice about it. Actually being there is something that I'll never be able to put into words. Seeing Max for the first time...my heart stopped....the world stopped....I was completely amazed!

Anyways, I gotta go. Just wanted to post a few photos of Max. You can bet your arse that there are waaaay more to come!
