Spyders!
Sometimes we as photographers get too wrapped up in the software used to process our photos, or the editing program used to manipulate, that we forget to cover the basic steps needed to ensure accuracy across the board.
Monitor Calibration
Do you need to calibrate your monitor?
If your like me, and want to achieve accurate skin tones, or consistent colors on every photo, then calibration is necessary.
The colorimeter that I use is made my Colorvision, called the Spyder. It works on all LCD and CRT monitors. I work on my laptop on location;when I get back to the office and move the photos to my desktop, I want them to look the same.

Basically, you plug it in via USB, then hold this little guy on the screen while it flashes red, green, and blue colors.
They indeed have higher end models, however their base model works just fine for my needs. My awesome photo lab takes it from there. The process takes roughly 10 minutes, and has a neat before/after view at the end of the process.
Before you know it, you have a custom ICC profile ready to shower good color goodness on all of your photos.
